Surgery

Dr. Shy and the staff at Starkville Veterinary Hospital offer safe, state-of-the-art surgical treatment to pets in the Starkville, Columbus, and West Point, Mississippi areas. We perform many surgical services including routine spays, neuters, and a wide variety of soft tissue surgeries such as biopsies, excisions of abnormal growths, removal of foreign materials causing obstruction in the digestive tract, and removal of bladder and urethral obstructions to name but a few. We also perform more advanced orthopedic surgeries including:

  • Cranial cruciate ligament repair - extracapsular stabilization
  • Patellar luxation - wedge resection and lateral or medial imbrication
  • Intramedullary pinning
  • External fixation

Starkville Veterinary Hospital is also proud to provide the latest surgical technology for the best treatment of your pet. We are one of the few hospitals in the region to use laser surgical technology for many procedures. A surgical laser cauterizes the skin as it cuts, sealing nerve endings and small blood vessels as it moves through the tissue. The advantages to laser surgery include reduced bleeding, less post-op pain, reduction of swelling, and increased precision.

If surgery is deemed necessary to ensure your pet’s safety and good health, our experienced staff will take the utmost care of your cherished pet.

At Starkville Veterinary Hospital, we understand that anesthesia is scary. It’s very common for people to be concerned, especially when their older pet needs a procedure. That’s why we require pre-op blood work for each surgery and post-op pain meds. That’s also why we monitor vital signs throughout all stages of surgery and recovery.

Once the surgery is complete, your pet will be brought out of anesthesia and vital signs will be monitored as well as pain levels. Starkville Veterinary Hospital will keep your pet onsite in our kennels where our veterinarian can supervise their recovery until they are deemed well enough to go home with their owners. All surgeries are followed up with a post-surgical examination and rehabilitation if needed.
