Regular exams are the best way to keep your pet healthy. Frequent physical exams help us establish an overall health profile of your pet and are useful in preventing and treating health problems before they become more difficult - and costly - to treat.

During a physical exam, Dr. Anthony and Dr. Shy perform a complete examination of your pet, evaluating your pet's vision and hearing, checking your pet's teeth and oral cavity, examining the joints and muscles for signs of arthritis, palpating the abdomen for signs of swelling and listening to your pet's heart and lungs. An exam is also an excellent time to discuss with us any changes in your pet's health and behavior.

Vaccinations

Many diseases that were once fatal to pets can now be prevented through the use of vaccinations. In most cases, we provide annual vaccinations unless titers prove otherwise. We follow the vaccination requirements set out by the American Animal Hospital Association; however, we understand that every pet may require a different vaccine schedule and can tailor a vaccine regimen to suit your pet.

Health Management

Every pet is different and each requires a different healthcare management plan. We manage diabetic patients, cats with hyperthyroidism and associated heart and kidney disease, and hypothyroidism and hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) in dogs. We also use esophagostomy tubes to treat anorexia and fatty liver disease in cats, as well as hepatobiliary disease.

Microchipping

Sometimes, a collar and ID tag are not enough to bring your pet home if he or she is lost. Microchipping your pet is a safe, easy way to help make sure your pet makes it back to you should he or she wander away from home. A microchip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath your pet's skin between the shoulder blades in a process similar to a vaccination. Each microchip contains a unique code that corresponds to a national database that contains your pet's vital information. Most veterinary hospitals and animal shelters have scanners that can detect and read the microchip. We use the Home Again microchip system.

Allergy Testing and Consultation

Starkville Veterinary Hospital Wellness & Medical Care

Like humans, pets can suffer from allergies. A variety of sources, from food and fleas to dust, mites and other irritants, can all cause allergic reactions in your pet. We use a variety of allergy tests to determine the cause of allergies and we will work with you to develop a treatment protocol for your pet.
