Dental Care

Dental care is about more than preventing bad breath in your pet. Periodontal disease is one of the most common - and most preventable - diseases in pets. If left untreated, plaque and tartar buildup in the teeth can lead to reddened and bleeding gums, loose teeth and other problems. Bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and potentially damage the liver, kidneys and other organs. That's why regular dental cleanings for your pet are so important.
To prevent periodontal disease, Dr. Anthony and Dr. Shy recommend your pet receive frequent dental cleanings coupled with a home-care routine. During dental cleanings, we use an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar and plaque from your pet's teeth. We also administer a dental vaccine (porphyromonas denticanis-gulae-salivosa bacterin) to help prevent periodontal disease.
Starkville Veterinary Hospital utilizes dental radiology equipment to check for tooth fractures and oral tumors. We are capable of performing a variety of dental procedures for your pet, including root planing and packing and surgical extractions using a high-speed bur drill.
